CHRONOLOGY OF EVENTS RELATING TO THE HISTORY OF HONG KONG, CHINA AND MACAU

History is marked by alternating movements across the imaginary line that separates East from West in Eurasia.
— Herodotus
In the polity of winds, as amongst the tribes of the earth, the real struggle lies between East and West.
— Joseph Conrad

The following is not intended to be an exhaustive chronology of events and dates, but rather those events I consider relevant to the historical narrative presented on my private walking tours. Those dates highlighted in bold I consider more or less essential way points for a basic understanding of the joint historical narrative of China, Macau and Hong Kong in relation to the the era of globalized trade, etc., particularly vis-a-vis China’s principal modern rival, the United States.

Certain dates I have inserted to provide familiar points of reference for the reader and myself. As many of you know, at the beginning of my tours, I always refer to 1492 and 1498 as when the early modern period began. This seems to be a fact accepted by most historians. Connecting the dates in this chronology goes a long way towards helping one see the forest from the trees. I have been sorting through these events for several years now and I will be constantly fine tuning this chronology as new developments and revelations occur.

And no, I do not try to cover all of this on a walking tour.

This chronology has been updated for the Hong Kong Spy Trail.
